The event is organized by the Modern Greek Program and the Film Hellenes in Chicago (FHC) and includes the support of the Department of Classics and Languages and the Department of Modern Greek. It is being coordinated by FHC's Program Director, Stefanos Deligiorgi, Program Coordinator, Nikos Lazaridou, and Cinema Studies major, Amanda Hacikyan. The goal of the Film Festival is to support the film industry in Greece and the Greek Diaspora, particularly young filmmakers, to encourage the development of a Greek audience, to establish an environment for contemporary cinema exhibition and discussion, to promote Greek film industry. The event will feature an extensive industry reception on Saturday, March 10th, where the directors of the films will be present to discuss their work, and where the audience can meet and talk to the directors about their careers. The University of Illinois hosts the festival with the support of the Modern Greek Program and the Departments of Classics and Modern Greek.
The selection committee for the festival were Annina Rizopoulou (at the Department of Modern Greek), Costas Papageorgiou (at the Department of Classics) and Antonios Voulgaris (at FHC). They were accompanied by the academic advisors from the departments, and the Cinema Studies major, Amanda Hacikyan, and Nikos Lazaridou who is also the Program Coordinator. Assistant Professor of Modern Greek, George Liardoudis participated as an advisor and also as the Greek representative on the selection committee. The first festival was co-sponsored by the Modern Greek Department and the Greek Club on campus. It was organized by the Department of Modern Greek, The Greek Club on campus, the Office of Greek Life, the Campus Greek Life Council, the Greek Student Association, the Program Coordinator, Nikos Lazaridou, and by the Cinema Studies major, Amanda Hacikyan. The event was officially supported by the University of Illinois and the Greek Club.
