Percussion instruments include the percussion section from the term percussion. A percussion section does not contain any keyboard, but is a separate set of instruments that make up this section of the chord organ. A percussion section is generally divided into the bass, alto, tenor, and treble percussion sections. A bass percussion section usually includes three to five mallets that are used to strike the instrument. A mallet is a hammer without a handle that is used to strike a surface.

The hammers strike the resonating board, causing a note to resonate. The note is not only dependent on the material of the hammers, but also the hammers striking different spots on the resonating board. There are many types of hammer and resonating board combinations giving a wide range of possible sounds. The wheeled organist keys the hammers and thus controls the output.
