Stems and blossoms are often an important part of freshwater algal blooms. Here, we present a simple automated method for quantifying the percent of stems and blossoms present in an image of freshwater plankton. The basic pipeline from image to analysis is demonstrated on a calibration series of microalgae and plant samples. Image-processing steps include contrast manipulation, background removal, filtering, object erosion and segmentation to identify stems, blossoms and non-plant material. The final result is a table of the percent of stems and blossoms present in the original image.
